Different Learners – Different Math?

On this web site you will find general information about the 4th Nordic Research Conference on Special Needs Education in Mathematics, Different Learners – Different Math?, which took place at the Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa, Finland. Thereto, this site will contain information concerning the lecturers presentation material, contact information as email address e.g., and further information about the articles for the Conference Research Report. There will also be links to deadlines and formularies for accepting that your presentation material will be published in the Conference Research Report and online on this web site.

The Conference Different Learners – Different Math? lasted from the 7th until the 9th of November 2007 and took place at the Åbo Akademi University. The Conference raised a great deal of interest, not only in the Nordic countries, but also internationally.
  • The Conference was divided into four topic areas: Early Intervention, Multicultural/Multilingual Math, Secondary, Vocational and Life-Long Learning and Different Math
  • All four topic areas were introduced by key note speakers who were Professor Johannes van Luit, Professor Alan Bishop, Professor Tine Wedege and Doctor Peet Morris
  • 156 registered at the Conference and most of the participators were either researchers or University teachers who were interested in the field of special needs education in mathematics
  • Participators came from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain, Tanzania and Taiwan
  • In the evaluation forms, that we have received, we can ascertain that most of the participators have found the conference both interesting and beneficial, although, some guests whished that the abstracts had been delivered a few days earlier.

Different Learners – Different Math?

The Conference was initiated, on the 6th of November 2007, with Lärardag (Teachers day) at the Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa.
  • 160 participated, of which most were students in pedagogic and teachers working on the field
  • Participators were mostly from Finland and Sweden
  • The languages used during the Lärardag were Swedish and Finish
  • Lärardagen consisted both of presentations and workshops
