Erland Eklund was appointed Professor of Rural Studies at the Faculty of Social- and Caring Sciences, Åbo Akademi University in Vasa, 31.7.2006. Before his appointment in Vasa, he was the holder of, inter alia, positions such as Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Head of Research at the Swedish School of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki. His research has ranged from the history of coastal fishing communities to environmental sociology and comparative studies of rural governance in Europe.  Current research comprises issues associated with immigration to Finnish rural areas, new roles and functions of rural areas in Late Modern society - including regulation of the new Equine Industry in Finland - and minority issues associated with ongoing reforms of the Finnish public government systems.
