Investigation 28: Simple
transformer and metal detector (not assessed)
Measure the primary and secondary voltage and
current for a simple transformer with different numbers of loops in the
solenoids. The main aims are:
To avoid overheating, turn up the voltage for a measurement and then
immediately turn it down again !
- to test the formulas valid for a simple
transformer from the Compendium
- to test how important the metal core is for
the functioning of the transformer
- to find the efficiency of the transformer
Why is it difficult to measure the secondary
voltage and current simultaneously?
Then remove the core from a step-up transformer
and connect e.g. a 5 V alternating voltage to it:

The
apparatus has now become a metal detector. Why?

Issues for
investigation:
- how
sensitive is the metal detector: how small amount of metal can it detect?
- how does
it react to different metals or other materials?
- how can
it be made more sensitive?
